Survive and Thrive
I was invited recently to meet with two successful entreprenuers. One a longtime investor with an enviable track record of success. The second an emerging industry leader who is garnering attention from the private equity market. The topic in each case was leadership and talent. Whether you are a startup organization, in the M&A process, executing an exit strategy, in a turnaround, or a mature business you must have both leadership and talent. To survive and thrive they must both be at the top of your list of business priorities.
The Talent discussion starts with Leadership. To attract Talent you have to have talent. To have Talent you have to have leadership. Why? Leaders understand that selecting and promoting talent is one of the most important roles they play. A good leader engages the team, they have the ability of integrating great people from different backgrounds, building a community with a common purpose that moves people in a new direction. They cut through the noise and confusion. They build engines of excellence. That is what attracts Talent.
The number of organizations operating with an international mandate is growing. Few teams today are not multi-cultural, social media has replaced traditional channels of communications, complexity is up, change is accelerating. Progress today is about speed and agility. So how do we attract Talent in this new world of work? Purpose and Passion.
Purpose
There are three legs to the purpose stool.
Clarity: Build an aspirational goal that is supported by strategic priorities.
Structure: remove all unnecessary levels in the organization.
Speed: execution is the key. Push decision making down in the organization as close to the customer as is possible.
Passion
Passion is built on trust. High performing organizations drive results and reward behaviours consistent with the values of the organization. Talent is attracted by a shared vision. It is the secret of engagement. You have to get it right!
To be a leader in today’s economy means accepting a new level of responsibility. It is more than what is in the job description. In a world with so much uncertainty leaders are called on to create the vision and engage people on the road to tomorrow. Talent is mission critical. It is the foundation for building that tomorrow.
