Courage and sacrifice
As an executive entrusted with leading complex organization challenges I have had the pleasure and privilege to work with a number of truly outstanding organizations here in Canada, across our neighbors in the Unites States, and globally from the U.K to France to Poland to Australia. Consistently whether we were building an international energy services business, designing sophisticated landing gear, or reinventing a consumer category for soup, our growth and success has been the result of the courage and sacrifice of leaders.
Life has always been busy and increasingly the new world of work has accelerated the pace of activity for all of us. The need for strong leadership in our personal and professional lives is ever more important. This past Saturday excerpts where published of former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney's tribute to British Prime Minister Winston Churchill at England's Blenheim Palace on the 50th anniversary of Churchill's death. I would like to share some of that speech.
"There is ample reason why Churchill continues to attract admiration around the world. He was the paragon of leadership during the Darkest period of Britain's history". "With unrelenting vigour and tenacity of purpose, he triumphed against all odds and we are all the beneficiaries".
"In June 1940, after Dunkirk, Churchill promised Parliament. "We shall not flag or fail. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender until in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forward to the rescue and liberation of the old."
"Leadership is not something learned in school. It is innate, an indelible mark of character steeped in integrity, courage, conviction, underscored by the moral imperative to do the right thing".
Each of us has a choice every day whether to take that uncomfortable step as a leader. In that moment step forward. Your courage and sacrifice is a gift and like Churchill we are all the beneficiaries.
