How talent wins

Each one of us in the new world of work is feeling the change. Do more with less. Do it faster. Big oil, cloud technology, interest rates, inflation, global economics. Mergers, layoffs, acquisitions, rebranding, consolidation. It is a new day!

This has a big week in sports. The Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup. The Golden State Warriors won the NBA Championships. Sunday Jordan Spieth became the youngest golfer player to win golf's U.S. Open since Bobby Jones in 1923. Whether you are a sports fan or not, there are lessons from these championship events. Lessons on How Talent Wins.

Lesson 1.

" the strength is in the mindset when you need to be present, you need to want to win" (Chicago defenceman Johnny Oduya). After having worked with high performers for many years there is a consistent approach and commitment. They know that it is not enough to just show up. My challenge to you is to set a big goal, be brutally honest with yourself about what you can change, and start to make a change. Want to win.

Lesson 2.

"You make your own breaks" (Jon Cooper, Tampa Bay Lightning coach). Time and time again I have heard people complain that they did not get the salary increase, the promotion, the plum assignment, or countless other concerns. In the new world of work the opportunities you get are the opportunities you make.  Think about your personal brand and take yourself to market.

Lesson 3.

Constant Presence. "You should get better in a job everyday. You get a little bit more experience. You get different situations. You know the players better, the league better, might know your opponent better..." (Joel Quennville, Chicago Blackhawks coach). The demands of our personal and professional life today tests us all in our unique circumstances. Face those challenges with a winning mindset, look for the small opportunities to be better, and be confident knowing you are making an impact.

Talent Wins.
