Faster First

With over 30 years in strategic leadership roles I have had the privilege of working with CEOs in many different capacities and from different perspectives. No successful, high-performing company has the same recipe for success. Each is a reflection of their own leadership, values, and culture.

All over the world, companies are being challenged by the COVID-19 crisis to find new ways to work with their people, their customers, and in their communities. What is emerging are inspiring stories of positive change and what people can accomplish working in new ways. Organizations are thinking differently. They are recognizing that their structures were too bureaucratic, too slow, too complicated and do not empower their people. The pandemic reminds us that people and organization structure are two sides of the same coin.

Successful leaders are responding to the current uncertainty by defining what the organization will be and why it will matter. They are adopting new ways of working by creating organizations that encourage people to stand up, gives them authority and responsibility, shows them how their work supports the company’s objectives, expects them to take personal ownership of the outcomes they are responsible for, and offers them the opportunity to share in the organization’s growth.  This is especially true for those people closest to the customer who must be empowered to make decisions, innovate, and get things done. Successful organizations are moving faster, fully embracing flatter structures aimed at achieving a high degree of alignment across groups ensuring that the right things get done first. This relies on strong leaders who can set priorities, make fast decisions, and execute flawlessly.

The economic panic created by the COVID-19 crisis has demonstrated the vulnerability of old thinking. Forward-looking companies are gaining sustainable advantage by creating structured responses that capture the passion, skills, and capabilities that people bring to work. This is too important to leave to chance.
