Apple Beats
Breakpoint Human Capital Management was founded on the knowledge that it’s time to define a new generation of human capital management. In 2005, what began as a small, independent alternative to traditional large management consulting firms, has developed into a successful organization based on an industry-changing core foundation: that a strategic skill set, deep industry knowledge, an extended network, and the strength of commitment to our clients is where it’s at.
Since then, our partnerships with executive leaders in Canada, the U.S., and internationally has built a track record of global success that delivers growth and sustainable value with passion and grit. How? Through a deep understanding that the biggest goals require more than just action, they require experience and the right people to build something great. Being exceptional is the name of the game.
Three years ago today, on August 1, 2014 a story of incredible opportunity, experience and being exceptional made headlines. Apple CEO Tim Cook announced their acquisition of headphone manufacturer Beats Co. owned by Jimmy Lovine and Dr. Dre for $3.1 billion dollars. At the time, Bloomberg reported that Apple acquired Beats to secure one man on their Board: Jimmy Lovine.
Why would Apple want Lovine on their board? Because he is a veteran record producer who has worked with some of the biggest names in music, including John Lennon, Stevie Nicks, Bruce Springsteen and U2. But he isn't just known for his hit record-producing skills. Lovine has a detailed knowledge of the music industry and he is one of the most forward-thinking executives around. The Apple Music streaming service relies on support from big-name artists, and Lovine has the knowledge and connection that is required to build something great. He also has an intrinsic understanding of industry changes and direction. In a highly competitive market, that’s invaluable for Apple, and aligns with their overarching strategic direction to do what it takes to be the very best.
In an interview with the New York Times, Apple CEO Tim Cook said Lovine and Dr. Dre were "really unique" and that "it's like finding the precise grain of sand on the beach. They're rare and very hard to find."
As a CEO, I know that with the right people, every organization has the opportunity to build something great. The biggest goals aren’t just about action, they require deep experience and trust. And with over 20 years in strategic leadership roles I know that it's time to define a new generation of human capital management. One that’s about growth and value and exemplifies a high-performing organization that is effective executing critical decisions, efficient realizing the benefits of scale, and engaged to go the extra mile to deliver strong business results.
At Breakpoint, we help identify opportunities, create strategies, and lead the execution where needed, providing both quick acceleration for immediate results and a steady burn for sustained performance. Turning traditional HR on its head and defining this new generation understands that it’s not just about making a great business with people, it’s about making a business great for people. It’s time.
